How many eSIMs can a phone hold, and how many can be active at once?
Most modern phones can store many eSIM profiles at once, but typically only one or two can be active at the same time. The stored profiles sit quietly in your settings until you switch to them, so keeping several travel eSIMs on one phone is normal. The exact storage limit and how many can run together depend on your phone model.
Storing an eSIM is not the same as using it
Your phone keeps each eSIM as a saved profile. You can add several profiles and they all stay stored, even the ones you are not using. Adding a new travel eSIM does not erase the ones already on your phone, so an inactive profile simply waits until you turn it on. The number a phone can hold varies by model, but modern phones comfortably keep multiple profiles side by side.
How many can be active at once
In everyday use, a phone runs one or two lines at the same time. That usually means one eSIM active on its own, or one eSIM plus your physical SIM working together (Dual SIM). Some newer phones can keep two eSIMs active at the same time. Even when two lines are active, your phone normally uses only one of them for mobile data at any given moment, and you choose which one.
Switching between your stored eSIMs
- Open your phone's settings and go to the mobile or cellular data section.
- Find the list of your SIMs and eSIMs, where each saved profile is shown.
- Select the eSIM you want to use and turn it on, or set it as your line for mobile data.
- Turn off any line you are not using to avoid unexpected roaming charges.
